SPECIAL AMERICANISM PROJECT
Over the course of many years now, the topic of Americanism in our schools has been on the decline. This is not a local event, but a national one, and our local schools are beginning to join the decline. Our children are not being taught the real history of our country, our people, and our beliefs, and sadly, they are not learning much of it from us. While the American Legion does all it can to promote Americanism and patriotism, it is difficult to make the impression on these children when they do not get it anywhere else.
It is for that reason that we have come up with the idea that something must be done to reinforce that teaching of Americanism and patriotism in another way, and that way has always been available from the Legion over the years, but has not been utilized properly. I guess the reason for that is that it costs money, a commodity that is always in short supply in most Posts, and certainly in the Gahanna Post, where the demands for contributions nearly always overwhelm the available funds. But, if we are to make the effort to reinstill the patriotism in our youth, it needs to start now, before they head off into the world not knowing what and why their country in the best in thw world.
For this reason, and since the Post has been asked to donate funds for backpacks for elementary children in the Gahanna area, we are looking to provide, along with those funds, a patriotic book that children love to read, and it is a known fact that they trade such books around, giving them the widest dissimination possible. These books are comic books on Americanism and Patriotism published by the American Legion itself, and are very interesting to kids and they learn from them. Remember when you read comic books? Did you not remember what they were about, and didn't you trade them with your friends? There are 4 books available plus another one for kindergarten kids if we can raise enough money to purchase them for all the school kids in Gahanna. We have set up a special Paypal account for all to donate to this effort and ask for everyone who can to donate at least $5.00 to it, or more if you can. You do not need an account at Paypal.
