AMERICANISM IN OUR SCHOOLS
The Gahanna Post #797 of the American Legion is undertaking a plan of action to work with the Elementary students of our Gahanna schools to help them learn more about America and it's traditions. It was discovered, although suspected all along, during the 4th of July parade, that our younger children do not even know what our flag stands for or what they should do when the National Anthemn is played.
This, along with prtevious newspaper articles telling of flags being removed from the classrooms, the Pledge ofg Allegiance not being observed, and children not being allowed to say a prayer if they wish, has cut to the roots of what our organi-zation stands for. We, as veterans of our nation, feel that it is our duty to change they way this is heading.
The Post Honor Guard will be doing it's best to educate the children on our Flag, and how to say the Pledge of Allegiance, and we as a Post, plan on distributing a large number of patriotic comic books, published by the American Legion, that will teach the children many things about our country that they are lacking from their schools. We feel that children learn to observe characters in books as their heroes and thru them learn the traditions upon which our country was founded. We hope to include these comic books into school supplies that another organi- zation is planning to distribute in backpacks.
In order to accomplish this large task, we will need the help and cooperation of many in the Gahanna area to enable the Legion to purchase all the books that are needed. We estimate that we will have to purchase anywhere from 400 to possibly 800 of them, at approximately $500.00. The Post has already committed to donate funds for the backpacks and school supplies, therefore funds are limited, but this cause is too important to pass by, therefore we have set up a special account at a bank in Gahanna that will accept donations made thru Paypal to be used for this purpose. It will be a continuing account for other purposes later, but right now, the emphasis is on our children and Americanism.
